The Bell Qualifier DLX MIPS Motorcycle Helmet is going to be a Bell starter full face helmets that’s packed with features gleaned from the Bell flagship Star line. The main thing is that the deluxe version comes with a MIPS energy management system and aphotochromic visor in the box, which is going to be a main plus point for the Qualifer DLX since most other helmets are going to be 100-200 Euros more expensive before you start seeing these visors.
So, with a recommended retail price of about 320 Euros for the MIPS version, or 380 USD, the Full-Face Helmet will be competing with the Icon Airflite, AGV K5-S, Scorpion EXO 1400 Air, and the HJC F70.
Material
The Bell Qualifier Deluxe MIPS Helmet is constructed out of a polycarbonate / ABS thermoplastic mix, which will mean you are getting a polycarbonate helmet that is designed for a lighter weight. The helmet is coming in 3 outer shell sizes with the first covering XS and S, then M and L, and lastly XL to 3XL, which is about standard for a quality helmet, and very good for this price category since you’ll get a safer, more proportional fit. The helmet is coming with an intermediate oval head fit and is ECE 22.05 certified though it only earned 3/5 stars from SHARP.
Lastly, the Qualifier MIPS will be coming in at a weight of about 1575 grams or 3 lbs and 7 oz. in a size M, which is about average for a polycarbonate helmet.
Ventilation
For airflow, the Qualifier DLX uses Bell’s Velocity Flow System which means you’re getting a large vent in the chin, which is adjustable, followed by another set of 4 air inlets in the brow controlled by another slider. This is something that you only get on the Deluxe version, since the regular Qualifier does not come with this vent.
Further back on the helmet, you get another set of adjustable air inlets. To let this hot air out you then get a set of 4 always open mesh covered exhausts with two above the spoiler and two underneath on either side.
Visor
The visor of the Bell Qualifier DLX MIPS is going to be one of the strong points for this helmet mainly because you’re getting an anti-scratch photochromic face shield right out of the box with this Deluxe MIPS version. This is something you very rarely see in a helmet at the 300 Euro price point. But it is a great feature that means you won’t have to play with an internal sun visor as you ride. As far as the rest of the features on the visor, it is Nutrafog II anti-fog treated by Bell though you can also pick up Pinlock ready visors and inserts separately.
As far as detentes, you are getting a small set of them as you raise the visor, though if you do want a cracked position, Bell have included a larger détente to bring plenty of air into the Qualifier, and another large one at the top.
To remove the visor, you do get a quick release mechanism where all you have to do is open the visor to the full open position and pull on the lever on the side and the visor will easily pop out. To put it back in again, you simply snap it back into place.
Liner
Lastly, the liner of the helmet is removable, washable, fits glasses, and is anti-bacterial. In addition to these strong features, there is also a that MIPS safety system inside.
The helmet uses a double D-ring chin strap for fastening and also is designed to fit a Cardo Bluetooth stereo communications system.
Finally, the helmet’s safety is enhanced by the inclusion of the MIPS liner. This is a unique system for managing oblique and rotational impacts by acting as a secondary slip layer to reduce the strain on your head if you do have bad luck. The internal slip plane rotates slightly from side to side, which will offer you that extra level of safety. This again makes this a solid helmet from a safety standpoint considering that only the Icon Airflite MIPS comes with this system in this price category.
Summary
The Bell Qualifier DLX MIPS delivers exception performance at incredible value for money. Not only is it already coming with that photochromic self-tinting shield, but you can even pick up the MIPS system for enhanced safety.
